Ilya Lichtenstein, who pled responsible to money-laundering prices tied to his position within the huge hack of crypto alternate Bitfinex, has apparently been launched early from prison.
In a Thursday night put up on X, Lichtenstein stated he was out early “thanks to President Trump’s First Step Act” (a prison reform invoice handed throughout Trump’s first time period).
“I remain committed to making a positive impact in cybersecurity as soon as I can,” Lichtenstein stated. “To the supporters, thank you for everything. To the haters, I look forward to proving you wrong.”
The Department of Justice arrested Lichtenstein and his spouse, Heather Morgan, in 2022 and seized $3.6 billion value of bitcoins that had been stolen from Bitfinex. The couple grew to become notorious after their arrest and have been featured in a Netflix documentary referred to as “Biggest Heist Ever.”
Lichtenstein finally admitted to his position within the hack and was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
It’s not clear whether or not the Trump administration performed a direct position within the release. An administration official advised CNBC that Lichtenstein “has served significant time on his sentence and is currently on home confinement consistent with statute and Bureau of Prisons policies.”
