Lasers can have a cooling impact in quantum experiments

    Mike_shots/Shutterstock

In the unusual world of quantum mechanics, nothing isn’t ever really nothing — and now we’ve discovered that nothing, or the absence of a photon, can be utilized to cool issues down.

One of the commonest methods scientists cool issues down is by using lasers. When particles of sunshine, or photons, with a particular frequency hit an atom or molecule, it absorbs the photon after which fires out one other photon with barely greater power, which cools the system total.
