Who Needs Search Anyway? Google Is Losing the Game It Invented

But Google remains the undisputed king of search. But it’s losing the concept of “search.”

October 2026, a worldwide share of 89.94% in the search engine market – for any other company this would be a number to throw champagne corks at. But for Google it was the first time since the end of 2015 that the figure had been below the 90% mark, albeit it had already been steadily falling from 92.9% in 2023. The problem was not only that someone took away a few percent, but that the whole way people searched for information was changing in a way that market shares could not capture.

The search box is still there. The people aren’t.

At the very least, Google’s finances are in good shape. Search and other revenue grew 17 percent in the second quarter of the year, reaching a total of 63.3 billion dollars. In that quarter, AI mode reached 1 billion monthly active users. Gemini-driven search has become more profitable, while the company is investing heavily in artificial intelligence.

But the content inside those walls is drying up.

Chartbeat, which uses data from a number of publisher sites, showed that from July 2025 to July 2026, the flow of traffic to publishers fell by 40.2% compared to the previous year – after a fall of 21.9% the year before. The share of search-driven page views fell from about 9% in July 2024 to 5% in July 2026. Another source, Define Media Group, was more direct: after the introduction of AI-Overview, organic search-clicking fell by 42% against the old base line – and “never recovered.”

That means: they type something in the Google search box, read the machine-generated summary and close the window. Roughly 60% of Google searches now end in zero clicks – the user never visits an external website. For Google, that’s a perfectly closed loop. For content creators, it’s the death of traffic.

The Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel coined the term “Google Zero” – the moment Google Search sends zero traffic to external websites. In 2026, he put it bluntly: “Google Zero is already a reality for publishers. It’s just that people only noticed once AI Mode arrived and the slow-moving change hit its tipping point.”

ChatGPT isn’t stealing search share. It’s stealing the “first stop.”

On the basis of market shares among the conventional search engines, Google faces almost no threat. Bing has a share of about five percent worldwide; DuckDuckGo, not even one. The real problem is that the behavior of the users has forked around the search for information.

The following results, drawn by Datos from data on millions of users and analysing the click-throughs of a broad cross-section of desktop users, show that in the second quarter of 2026, traditional search accounted for 10.5 per cent of U.S. desktop web activity, while the combined market share of the various stand-alone AI services (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) was 1.83 per cent. This is nine to one in favor of the traditional search engines.

However, if we are to judge by this simple measure, we might miss the fact that there are already 1.2 billion people a week who use ChatGPT. These people might ask only three or five questions a day, and they might just as easily walk away, but these questions are exactly those which previously flowed to Google, questions like how to cook a certain dish, what a contract clause means, recommendations for local tradesmen. The distinguishing feature of these queries is that they do not require ten blue links, they require an answer.

A more significant aspect of the quality of AI traffic is that it is four or five times the quality (the conversion rate) of organic search. In several cross-industry studies, B2B-tech conversion was 14.2% vs. 2.8% for organic traffic, and 1.81 percent v 1.39 percent for e-commerce conversions —all these referring to a slender traffic volume, but a high-quality one. Which suggests that users who have received recommendations from an AI system will first go to the search engine to “verify” the brand, and then buy directly. That is to say, Google’s position in the decision chain has shifted from “discovery” to “verification.”

    Google’s prisoner’s dilemma

But it’s not as if Google didn’t foresee this problem. Its answer was: if people want answers in search, then build them into search. A.I.-overview, A. I.-mode, follow-up conversation, search-agent, all this was designed to bring the whole cycle of information consumption into the gates of Google.

But therein lies the inherent self-destruction of the business plan. The advertising revenue of Google is based on the reliance of the user on clicking through to the advertiser’s site, but now the AI-generated summaries are replacing the click, and so Google’s own AI-driven products are eroding the very base of its ad business. In the first quarter of 2026, Alphabet’s advertising revenues from network advertising—which is dependent on sending traffic out to other web sites—dropped by a whopping 4%. And although its search revenues kept growing, that was only because it had filled up more of the results page with ads and raised its unit prices to make up for the drop in the number of clicks. That’s exploitation, not growth.

These are not minor sites that are grumbling. USA Today has said it may cut off Google’s crawling access entirely if its search traffic continues to fall. Reddit is reviewing its $60-million-a-year deal with Google. Politico and Reuters are considering whether to limit Google’s crawler or to put up registration walls. The world of content is seriously considering turning its back on Google.

A UK regulatory court has already ruled that Google must let news publishers opt out of its AI-powered features without that affecting their rankings on its regular search engine. If that ruling is followed in other countries, it could destroy the legal basis of Google’s business model, which is based on using publishers’ content to train an artificial intelligence and then using that same AI to cut off those publishers’ traffic.

    The definition of losing

Its share of the search market would not fall by 90 percent. With default placements in Chrome and on Android, with billions of users’ habits, and with a hundred billion dollar budget for advertising, it will probably stay on top of the “search” category for years to come.

But the word “search” is being redefined. Nowadays, when people have a question, their first instinct is no longer to go to Google, to type in keywords, and to sift through a list of results, but to open a chat box, describe the problem in full, and then ask for an answer in natural language. This is not even a matter of cutting its market share in half; it is a simple question of no longer being the starting point for the most important queries.

At its July, 2026 earnings call, Google announced that AI-mode drove increased engagement, in the form of new queries. This is true: people spent on average between one and nine minutes more using AI mode than with traditional search—but during these extra minutes, they didn’t leave Google, and they weren’t driving any traffic. So inside its own garden, Google was winning the overtime game, while outside the gate the world was learning how to do without its front door.

Who needs search anyway? Now that answers can be directly created, recommendations can be conversationally spoken and verifications do not need links, the kind of search that required people to dig through the ten blue links for an answer is becoming unnecessary. What Google is losing is not market share. It is the information-retrieval paradigm it invented and dominated for twenty-five years.
